Considering a Career in the Automotive Industry? Now is the Perfect Time to Explore

Have you thought about a career in the automotive sector? With thousands of opportunities for rapid career advancement, this is an ideal moment to delve into this dynamic industry.

The automotive field is on the verge of major transformation, with over 100,000 job openings expected*. These roles cover a broad spectrum, including marketing, sales, technology, and engineering.

Today’s automotive careers break away from the outdated image of grease-stained overalls and grimy work environments. Modern vehicles are essentially advanced computers on wheels, making a career in this sector an opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology.

The industry offers a variety of roles across different areas, all supported by comprehensive on-the-job training programs designed to equip employees with the skills needed for success.

Historically, women have been underrepresented in the automotive industry, but this is rapidly changing. Female technicians now represent 10 percent of the workforce, a substantial 125 percent increase since 2011**. The industry is not only expanding its doors but also actively supporting women through mentorship, networking opportunities, and flexible work arrangements.

With over 100,000 positions available and a strong commitment to training and support, now is an excellent time to consider a career in the automotive sector. Whether you’re seeking a new challenge, a fresh start, or a rewarding career with a meaningful impact, the automotive industry welcomes you.

In recognition of this potential, the automotive event organizers Automechanika Birmingham and the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) are highlighting the diverse career paths and opportunities within the sector through their ‘There’s More to Motor’ campaign and an inspiring new ‘Women in Automotive’ documentary.

The IMI’s ‘There’s More to Motor’ campaign aims to address critical industry needs by challenging outdated perceptions, showcasing the sector’s advancements, and driving recruitment to fill the growing skills gap.

This initiative aligns with Automechanika Birmingham’s latest documentary, which features the stories and experiences of women thriving in the automotive industry. These women are dedicated to debunking myths about the sector and demonstrating that there is truly “more to motor” than meets the eye.

The documentary includes insights from Joanna Smith and Jodie Barber, co-owners of the female-run car dealership Wink Cars. The pair are strong advocates for women in the automotive industry and are passionate about empowering women in business.

Alex Jones, Marketing Director at Messe Frankfurt UK, the organizers of Automechanika Birmingham, highlights the sector’s appeal: “Whether it’s technology, engineering, sales, or customer service, the automotive industry offers a fast-paced, purposeful career that contributes to the safety and innovation of the vehicles on our roads.”

Jones adds: “Our ‘Women in Automotive’ documentary showcases the journeys, challenges, and successes of women who have transitioned into the automotive sector. The future of automotive is inclusive, innovative, and incredibly exciting—there is indeed more to motor!”

For those considering a career change, the Automechanika Birmingham event in June 2025 will feature a dedicated ambition and careers area, welcoming all interested in exploring opportunities in the automotive industry.
