Artificial intelligence is learning to understand emotional nuances from delicate speech inflections to micro-expressions, something that even humans find difficult to do. Why is this happening? a combination of therapeutic goals, financial aims, and the desire to make technology less foreign and more… sympathetic.

Early foundations in affective computing have been established by firms such as MIT spin-off Affectiva. In order to identify emotional states in real time, its software looks for tonal changes and facial signals. Imagine teaching your laptop to “feel” the strain in your voice or the apathy in your eyes while you’re on a Zoom call. However, Affectiva is not by itself. Pepper, SoftBank’s humanoid robot, was created to identify human emotions and react with consoling actions. While this was going on, Japan’s Groove X developed LOVOT, a cute and cuddly robot that can only be held. Like a pet in need of affection, it flutters its eyes and radiates warmth.

These endeavors are not merely symbolic. Emotionally intelligent AI has the potential to help diagnose anxiety or depression early in mental health care, especially in underprivileged settings. A virtual therapist who picks up on your hesitancy or lack of eye contact may be able to identify dangers that a text-based chatbot would completely overlook. Robots with emotional awareness could be used in elder care to help fight loneliness by providing gentle companionship; they would respond with more relatable words rather than prefabricated ones.

The goal also encompasses high-stakes industry. Artificial Intelligence has being used by contact centers to monitor the emotional tone of calls. Systems can either play a soothing script or transfer the call to a human if a customer becomes agitated. These days, HR tech platforms are experimenting with AI that assesses applicants based on their emotional stability and flexibility in addition to their qualifications. Depending on who you ask, this tendency may or may not inspire confidence.

Future consumer technology, according to startups like EmoShape, will not only be intelligent but also emotionally responsive. If your home assistant senses that you’ve had a difficult day, it may queue up some soothing music instead of merely playing it when you ask it to.

In an effort to incorporate more than reactive code into robots, engineers are turning to psychology, particularly early caregiver-infant interactions. Nonviolent communication frameworks, which place a strong emphasis on empathy, active listening, and emotionally sensitive response, are being appropriated by some. Some are observing how infants react to tone of voice or eye contact, then feeding such patterns into neural networks.

However, the problem is far more than just identifying emotion. In order to be truly emotionally intelligent, one must be able to respond in a timely, appropriate, and productive manner rather than merely labeling emotions. The situation could worsen instead of improve if a machine recognizes anger but reacts in a positive manner. One of the most challenging issues in this field is still closing that gap.

When a speaker at a conference last fall discussed losing her job, I saw a demonstration of an emotionally responding avatar that furrowed its forehead and nodded. When I realized it wasn’t human, I became slightly uneasy after being briefly moved.

There is definitely tension here. AI that is emotionally intelligent balances manipulation and service. A robot may reassure you or encourage you to make a purchase if it recognizes when you’re weak. Additionally, emotional reliance is a concern. Human relationships may seem insufficient to a child who develops a bond with a responsive robot. Anthropomorphizing these systems too soon, according to some experts, could cause us to conflate sincerity and simulation.

The momentum yet persists. According to researchers, emotionally intelligent AI has the potential to improve the humanity of our gadgets by enhancing rather than replacing human interaction. A robot’s loving glance may make a lonely elder feel a little less alone. Chatting with a sympathetic virtual tutor could help a stressed-out student stay focused for longer. When an automobile interface knows when to play music and when to be quiet, even a jaded traveler may find solace.

The thought that machines could learn to care, or at least act as though they do, is beautiful. It implies the future of AI will be based on something more complex and deeply human rather than just reasoning and calculation. Feeling. Sensing. Uncertainty.

And that might work incredibly well if done carefully.
